BENZOCAINE AND CHILDREN

Please read this newsletter, especially if you have children under the age of 2. The FDA has reissued a warning about the use of Benzocaine Gels or Liquids. Benzocaine is found in over-the-counter teething pain products. Children under the age of 2 who use products containing Benzocaine are at risk for a rare but serious disease called Methemoglobinemia. This disease reduces the amount of oxygen carried through the blood steam. The most severe cases can result in death.

Parents may not always recognize the signs and symptoms of Methemoglobinemia when using products containing Benzocaine. The symptoms include pale skin, lips and nail beds; shortness of breath; and fatigue.

Instead of using over-the-counter teething products with Benzocaine, the FDA advises to follow the recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics. They recommend giving a child a teething ring which has been chilled in the refrigerator or gently rubbing or massaging the child's gums with your finger to relieve the symptoms.

Please help us spread the word!

Sincerely,
Drs. Landry and Maes
